Thank you so much, man!!!!!!! These videos are just awsome and I am having a blast looking, listening and learning about Kenny Dorham. I’m on my I-pod right now downloading. My brother for years has told me I need to check-out Dorham, brother was my brother right!!!! He’s pretty cool even if he is a sax player.
I really liked the cuts from Dorham’s Sings and Plays album. It just convinces me more and more about the vocal approach being the only way to comanding the horn and developing your voice on the instrument. If you’re not singing in your head, how can it come out the horn?
I love Dorham’s diction and vocal-onset on every word, it’s so precise and yet he swims through the melodies with comfort, swing and ease. He allows the melody to be the melody. It brings a sense of intelligence and sophistication to the whole aura and sound of the album. Plus, I’m hearing a little bit of a Joe Williams influence that just brings more elegance to it.
His playing, what can I say the guy’s an artist. He’s a total individual, just playing himself not worried about anything but making his statements and interpretations of each tune…Nice to hear!!!
He’s not stroking himself, he’s playing the tune.
See you in the practice room. Thanks for these videos, I had a ball.
